A Film From The Year You Were Born

The year was 1986.. and, after doing a bit of research, quite a few films popped up.

Top Gun
Platoon
Ferris Bueller's Day Off
Stand By Me
The Great Mouse Detective

I was going to talk about The Great Mouse Detective, as it is the film I was most familiar with, but I do believe I have used that gem before.. so.. I decided to use Pretty In Pink.

Molly Ringwald plays Andie, who is a girl that doesn't fit in with the popular kids because she isn't rich.. etc, her best friend, Duckie, is in love with her, yet she thinks it is all a joke as he usually plays it off as one.

Then rich, popular Blaine comes in to the picture.. and it is fairly predictable after that.

Though it is really endearing and a lovely film. I have a soft spot for John Hughes films.. so there! I think most people do.

While I was reading up on the film (just because that is what I do), it says that at the prom, a girl lures Duckie over.. The girl is Kristy Swanson aka Buffy (from the movie).. I am going to need to watch Pretty In PInk again soon. I love Buffy! The movie.. not the TV show, I never got in to that one.. anyways..

A Movie You Used To Love, But Don't Anymore

Does such a thing exist? For me (for the most part), I either quite like a movie off the bat, or I don't like it. Sometimes it goes the other way where I watch a movie and I'm like "meh", but upon second (third, fourth, fifith) viewings, I really like it! (The Hangover & Bridesmaids are examples).. but the opposite.. hmmmm..

I am digging pretty deep here.. but I'm going to say Remote.

My siblings and I used to LOVE that movie.. thought it was hysterically funny and we still quote lines and bits from it - but I remember a friend saying "well, I want to see this movie!" (this was probably 8+ years ago now) - we got a hold of the movie, and watched it.. and it was pretty awful.

Though, we were doing a part from the movie the other day and my siblings said that they wanted to see it again.. Might have to try and get a hold of it one more time and see how we feel about it.

There aren't many movies (for me) that cross the line from "I love it!" to "ew, no!" for me.

What is a movie you used to love, but don't anymore? Why?

A Short Film

I am going with one that I have watched multiple times during my "youth". It was on the movie channels all the time between movies.. a filler, if you will.

It is called "Bob's Birthday". It is about a couple, and the husband, Bob, is coming home from work (he is a dentist), and he is supposed to get changed and go out for supper with his wife as it is his birthday. BUT. What he doesn't know is that all their friends are hiding around the living room to give him a surprise birthday party. He starts complaining about his life and their friends all while his wife is trying to usher him upstairs to put on some pants.

It is hilarious and awkward. And even as a child, I was always enthralled with it. And watched it every single time.

Huh. Apparently it won an Oscar. Awesome!

A Documentary

I wasn't sure if I should go with the last documentary I watched, or my favourite..

I will start off saying the last documentary I watched was Modify - it was obviously about body modification and talking to individuals who have body modifications or who work on them.. It was actually quite good. I still feel that a lot of people look at them as if they are "freaks", and I think quite the opposite. I mean, I think it is awesome, but it doesn't mean I was going to start suspending myself from hooks - but that doesn't mean I think they are a terrible person for doing so. Very interesting.

Now. My favourite. I am going to go with Bowling For Columbine. The reason is: I have actually watched it 3-5 times.. and usually, for a documentary, I am only going to ever watch it once. I feel like it should have been an eye opener for gun issues, and yet mass shootings keep happening. It was also interesting to see both spectrums - those opposed to guns, and gun enthusiasts.

What is the last documentary you watched? Or your favourite??

Anything Film Related

Hmm.. what to talk about..

Oh! I know!

Foley artists and how much I freaking love them.

Nowadays, it is more streamlined and less.. in your face? Unless it is an explosion - then it can get pretty extreme. But in those beauty 80s films.. the foley artists just let you have it! I was watching 'Jack's Back' a few weeks ago, and I almost fell out off of the couch in sheer delight! The footstep sounds were so over the top - and any time someone was walking around, you knew it. So good!

Many probably don't enjoy it - such as my ma - who openly complained about how over the top the sounds were - but I feel that is what made them even better. What would I know? I'm just a doctor. (side note:not really - it is just something my sister and I say all the time).

I just feel that they don't get the respect that they deserve. I saw something before.. basically a mini-documentary on foley artists.. the guy was awesome! He had the most random things around his studio - and would be like 'oh, this staple gun and this bowling ball are used to make this sound'.. It was mind blowing to me at the time because I just figured that they just went with the sounds as is.. So young, so naive.

What are your views on foley artists??

Scariest Movie You Have Ever Seen

"What's your favorite scary movie"
'Kazaam! You know, the one where Shaq plays a genie."
"That's not a scary (horror) movie."
"Yeah, well, you've never seen Shaq act!"

I swear in the movie ghost face says that it's not a scary movie, but imdb says otherwise, hence the horror in brackets. I wanted to make sure I had that quote close to correct - I did.. other than that.. moving on!

Although this movie no longer scares me - most movies don't anymore (other than the random vertical leap or yelp) - I would have to say the scariest movie I have ever seen is..

The Exorcist III

If anyone is reading this and has seen that particular film, you're probably like "whhhhat?!?!?"

Ok. Story time.

When I was *ahem* quite a bit younger.. I woke up at 3am feeling awful.. when I feel awful, I curl up on the couch with a blanket and watch TV/a movie until I pass out, or get feeling more ill - which ever. Flicking around the channels, I land on The Exorcist III, but I don't know this. The TV Guide (yes, this was before digital cable had it all mapped out perfectly) said it was something completely different. In my sickly stupor, I start watching this film. ***Spoilers*** I see statues crying blood, I see a sheeted person follow a nurse out of a locked room with hedge clippers, and I see an old lady scuttling across ceilings like a fly.

I'm terrified.

Follow the next many, many year.. I bring up there parts of the movie in many conversations. No one ever knows what I'm talking about. I figure I have conjured up this movie in my dreams and that is that. Then, traveling through the horror sections at a movie store (aka a constantly perused section) - I finally pick up a copy of TEIII and low and behold, it says something about a woman crawling across the ceiling like a fly.

I take it home.. start watching it.. and almost turn it off because I did see one or two blood crying statues, but it didn't feel right. Just as I am about to turn it off, I see the sheet covered person come out from a locked room with hedge clippers. My heart stopped.

I have watched it so many times now that I'm more so numb to the affects that the movie once held over me. We're cool now! Sort of. It doesn't scare me as much.. but it still sort of does. Make sense?

What is the scariest movie you've ever seen??

Favourite "Cult Classic"

Ohhhh boyyyyy..

Again, many, many choices..

I could go with Office Space, maybe Clerks, or Showgirls.. maybe even The Rocky Horror Picture Show..

But I am going with......... ...... ....... Evil Dead 2

Why? Because I have seriously seen the movie at least 15 times and I never tire of it.. Bruce Campbell is just.. amazing.

And the scene where everything in the room laughs at him? I die!

The lady in the cellar.. the headless girlfriend.. ugh, so many good things!

If you have never seen this movie - please, for your sake, as well as my own, please watch it! If you don't love it, you will at least take something from it. Actually, watch the movie trilogy.

Evil Dead
Evil Dead 2
Army of Darkness

You'll love it all!
